Irish Famine and Bytown – An evening of history.
Join us for an evening of discussion of the history of the Irish Famine Refugees in Bytown.
Join historian, author Michael McBane as he tells the previously untold story of Bytown’s Sisters of Charity and the extraordinary actions undertaken to save the lives of the Irish Famine Refugees.
Michael McBane will also draw on his expertise of Ottawa’s Irish history and delve into the many people buried at Beechwood who play a role during this period.

Michael McBane is a lifelong student of Ottawa Valley Irish history and folklore. He is author of “Bytown 1847: Élisabeth Bruyère and the Irish Famine refugees” (2022); “John Egan: Pine and Politics in the Ottawa Valley” (2018); and “Irish Famine Stories in the Ottawa Valley,” (1996).
